Choosing a Crafting “Word of the Year”

Word of the Year or Resolution?

A brand new crafting year!
Like so many others around the world, I always think of making New Year’s Resolutions.  I would enter January with high hopes of embracing those resolutions and following them all the way through December.  Well, I’m sure you know what happened – I was lucky to make it to February!
Several years ago I came across an article about “Discovering Your Word of the Year.”  Having only 1 focus word throughout the year instead of a list of resolutions I knew I probably wouldn’t keep was a wonderful idea!  So I begin choosing my word of the year!
My very first word of the year???
During the last few years, I’ve decided to also have a Crafting Word of the Year!

Why Choose a Crafting Word of the Year?

A Crafting Word of the Year can act as a theme echoing your chosen crafting goal.  It is a single word to inspire you throughout your 12 month Crafting Adventure.

How would you chose your

Crafting Word of the Year?

  • Reflect on your previous year – What did you accomplish, what would you do differently…
  • Identify your focus – What would you like to do or learn in the new year…
  • Brainstorm – Write down 1 to 5 crafting focus areas for the year.  Do you want to explore new techniques, create more cards (and send them), do you want to inspire others and share your love of crafting?  This list could be endless.
  • Review your list – think about each focus area
  • Narrow your list down to the 1 area most meaningful to you, would guide you through your crafting year, and remind you of what you would like to accomplish this year.

My Crafting Word of the Year Short List

After several days of considering all the possible crafting words (there are a lot!), I narrowed my list down to the following words:
  • Courage – to pursue new crafting opportunities and face challenges head-on
  • Simplify – to declutter my crafting space
  • Gratitude – to show appreciation to those joining  me on my crafting journey
  • Inspiration – to look for inspiration in everything and inspire others in their crafting journey
  • Persevere – to continue my crafting journey even when things get tough (and I get tired)
That was fairly easy!  The hard part came in choosing my ONE word for the year!

My 2024 Word of the Year!

Courage

COURAGE

  • To try new techniques and step outside my comfort zones and experiment with new techniques
  • To turn setbacks into stepping stones and transform challenges into opportunities for growth
I haven’t abandoned the other 4 words.
They’ll remain on my list until next year!

Incorporating Your Word of the Year

Once you’ve chosen your crafting word, integrate it into your daily life!
  • Visual Reminders: Create visuals, such as posters or digital wallpapers, even a custom-made ‘charm’ featuring your word to serve as a constant reminder.
  • Journaling: Reflect on how your word influences your experiences and decisions by journaling regularly.
  • Goal Setting: Align your goals and actions with your word to ensure they support your overarching theme for the year.
Choosing a Crafting Word of the Year is a simple, yet powerful practice that can bring focus to your crafting journey.
Let your chosen word inspire you in your crafting journey this year.
Remember, your Crafting Word of the Year isn’t just a word – it’s a reminder of what you want to accomplish this year.
